Connected Cars: What You Need to Know About the Disruptive Smart Car

Ashton McCullough • September 26, 2021

Even though technology has massively improved, it seems as if people still struggle with the same problems. Commuting to and from work is just as much of a hassle as it was back then, if not even harder thanks to the congested traffic that blocks roadways for miles. Looking for parking is still a stress-inducing experience, which causes everyone to lose time, money, and just a bit of their sanity.

If only driving could somehow be as convenient as our mobile phones. After all, those little internet-connected devices have become the backbone of modern society and make every task just a little easier to complete than before. On the other hand, driving seems as if it’ll always remain in the dark ages as the rest of society progresses. That is, until now..

Rather than just our phones being connected to the Internet, a new type of technology called Connected Car Technology is on the rise. It has the revolutionary power to change everything about the way people drive, commute, and of course, look for parking. Let’s take a deep dive and explore the potential of what a connected car can offer.

What is a Connected Car?

The essence of a connected car is that it can connect to the Internet via a WLAN, or Wireless Local Area Network. This allows any car to share the internet with devices inside and out, including the transferring of any data between a variety of services.

In general, plenty of companies operate this technology on two systems — embedded and tethered, which encompass either a chipset and antenna or hardware-to-phone setup respectively.

This will empower any driver or rider to use the power of Internet of Things technology to successfully share data, download software, and far more.

But what are the real-life applicable benefits of having a connected car and how can it transform the way people operate on the road? That’s exactly what we’ll explore next.

What are the Benefits & Features of a Connected Car?

Let’s take an inside look into all the smart features that any driver can take advantage of in a connected car.

Connect to the Internet

Any connected car will be able to provide all of its passengers Wi-Fi connectivity, which offers perfect entertainment for those long drives and vacation trips. It also allows the car to receive information from road infrastructure and update the driver with news about road conditions, what the traffic situation looks like, and how the weather may fare out for the rest of the day. Not to mention in-vehicle Entertainment which includes integrations with various platforms that allows streaming.

Control the Car from the Phone

Hate reaching an arm far beyond the seat to struggle in reaching for a button? A connected car will now empower any passenger to reduce the hassle with the press of a button on a smartphone app or voice. Whether the goal in mind is to lock the door, open the sunroof, or even start the engine, everything can be easily done through the wireless network.

Vehicle to Vehicle Communication

Just like instant messaging on the phone, a connected car can help a driver learn important information about the surrounding cars and how they’re driving on the road. It plays a vital role in safety and communication.

More Accessible Parking

Ever struggle with parking in extremely tight places or shudder about the thought of parallel parking? A connected car will be able to whisk those worries away with their ability to automatically park a car. Additionally, they can use the benefits of IoT device connectivity to locate a great parking spot without needing to circle around the same block over and over again.

Geofencing and Security

Along with a bunch of convenience benefits, a connected car will also offer a host of security and safety strengthening features. One of them includes the ability to geotrack drivers via an app so that loved ones can keep tabs on their journey. Other advantages include emergency SOS calls and assistance when accidents and crashes occur.

Final Thoughts

Finally, it seems as though connected cars will make up for the technology gap that drivers have been facing for so long. Whether it’s with improved safety features or the ability to make parking just a little easier, it’s no doubt time for the connected car technologies to disrupt the way that transportation functions across the world.
